Hi , I’m using a bridge camera Fujifilm s7000. I’ve found it difficult to take photos indoors in low light conditions. The exposure looks right but blurred. I’m trying to take photos of our baby. aperture priority mode f 2.8. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Many Nikon DSLRs have a tendency to overexpose their in-camera JPEGs by 0.3 to 0.7 EV, depending on the model. However, Nikon Matrix metering seems to produce reliable raw files because, at low ISO values, the raw clipping level is circa 2.5 EV above JPEG clipping level. The JPEG clipping level is influence by the Picture Control settings whereas the raw data clipping level is not.Much of that is useful, but I don't see the reason for not using DRO when shooting RAW+Jpeg. In fact, I suggest the opPosite, sine then you have it both ways, i.e., you have the RAW file to do whatever you want to do with, and you have the DRO in the Jpeg. Why wouldn't you want to do that? HDR Pro Camera creates well-exposed full-resolution pictures captured with the phone's camera and from already stored pictures It has been suggested that if you have DRO on, the camera will try harder to not blow the highlights (will tend to underexpose more).  I don't know if this is true or not.  Aside from that, it really shouldn't affect the RAW pixel data itself.  The RAW file might have a tag to indicate that the DRO setting was on, as a hint to post-processing software.

While there is no set rule for camera settings that work well in every shooting environment, I noticed that there are some settings that I personally set on every camera I use, which are universal across all brands of cameras on the market. These are the “base” settings I set initially – once they are done, I rarely ever revisit them. In addition, there are particular camera modes that make the process of capturing images easier or quicker, especially for someone who is just starting out. Let’s go through these common camera settings in more detail!Video features have become an important factor to many photographers when choosing a new camera. Some cameras also come with an “Auto AF” mode, which looks at the whole scene and tries to focus on either the nearest subject, or a subject the camera thinks is important. I would recommend to avoid using such modes for most beginners, because it is better to have control over exactly where your camera focuses by moving your focus point to the spot your camera should focus on. You can achieve this by switching to the Single-Point AF-Area Mode, as explained in the autofocus modes explained article. Once you have a single point to move around in your viewfinder, you can either move that focus point within your frame on your subject / area of interest, or move your subject to the focus point: HDR stands for High Dynamic Range. Other companies also use it, including Nikon and Pentax although they give it their own name rather than DRO.You should always make sure that you are shooting in the best autofocus mode depending on what you are photographing. For example, if you photograph a still subject, you might want to use Single Area Focus Mode (also known as “Single Area AF”, “One Shot AF” or simply “AF-S”), whereas if the subject you are photographing is continuously moving, you would want to switch to Continuous / AI Servo Focus Mode, since you would probably want your camera to actively track your subject. The main reason is that such modes vary greatly not just between different camera manufacturers, but also different models. So if you learn to always rely on a particular scene mode on one camera and decide to upgrade to a new one in the future, you might not be able to find the same scene mode on a different camera model. It is also important to highlight that most higher-end and professional camera models don’t even come with scene modes in the first place.

If there is a setting for selecting RAW compression, always select Lossless Compressed, as explained here, since it reduces the amount of space your RAW files consume. While things like Picture Controls don’t matter for RAW images (they only impact the way the image appears on your camera’s LCD), it is best to stick with a standard profile without tweaking any other settings like Sharpening, Contrast, Saturation, etc, as such settings only matter if you shoot in JPEG format.

Introduction to Photography

DRO is the more confusing one. Most (maybe all?) NEX cameras let you take DRO pictures (Auto or otherwise) in both JPEG and RAW modes. BUT, DRO is not applied to RAW files. In camera, the DRO effect appears to apply to the images in playback, but when you look at RAW files on the computer, no DRO effect is saved to the RAWs. The conclusion is that when shooting RAW, don't use DRO, or at least understand that you are seeing an inaccurate representation of your RAW file on your camera. This is kind of like white balance in the sense that you can set it, but it isn't really applied to the RAW file until the RAW is processed (the difference being that white balances is "temporarily saved" to the RAW so you have a starting point in post, and DRO settings are lost entirely). The same with color space and white balance – you do not have to worry about them when shooting RAW, since you can change them later. Unless you know what you are doing, I would keep “long exposure noise reduction” turned on, since it does affect your RAW images when shooting long exposures – it works by reducing the amount of noise you will see in your images (although it will also double the amount of time it normally takes to capture an image). All other in-camera lens corrections, dynamic range optimizations and noise reduction options should be turned off as well, since they do nothing to improve your RAW images.0 Reply Load More Comments Primary SidebarCategoriesComposition and ArtEssays and InspirationPhotography TechniquesPhotography TutorialsPost-ProcessingReviews Photography TutorialsPhotography BasicsLandscape PhotographyWildlife PhotographyMacro PhotographyComposition & CreativityBlack & White PhotographyNight Sky PhotographyPortrait PhotographyStreet PhotographyAdvanced PhotographyRecommended GearBest DSLR CamerasBest Mirrorless CamerasBest Entry-Level DSLRsBest Cameras for Landscape PhotographySupport Us

This is one of the comments here that I am inclined to disagree with. HDR improves the effective dynamic range of the sensor, and should be used in typical circumstances for motionless subjects except when contrast is obviously less than typical. If you are deeply involved with post-processing on a computer and insist on having RAW files then you are faced with an unfortunate choice, but you can of course take multiple exposures and combine them in post-processing. The pertinent fact is that many very routine subjects present a range in luminance that is easily great enough for image noise to appear in dark areas of the picture and degrade the image quality. This is true for any picture taken outdoors in sunlight but that includes some shaded area, which virtually all pictures of that sort do. When you cannot use HDR, DRO is the next best thing. It will not improve the effective dynamic range of the sensor, and more will likely will reveal the noise that is present in dark areas, but rendering of tonal variation and gradation is vastly superior to what you get with any conventional tone mapping curve. If you end up with a distracting amount of noise in dark areas or inadequate contrast, you can apply appropriate truncation in post processing, which is trivial to do whereas doing the reverse is difficult and not even entirely possible unless you work from the RAW file which has not had the tone mapping curve applied. www.zwischendrin.com/en/browse/hdri (no sort function I could find, the free ones are scattered throughout the pages) http Very often, these are in the high to very high dynamic range categories High-dynamic-range imaging (HDRI) is a high dynamic range (HDR) technique used in imaging and films to reproduce a greater dynamic range of luminosity than what is possible with standard digital imaging or photographic techniques There is no “Best” anything. Whether or not only Sony does this now, I have no idea. When first introduced, there was much scepticism and many threads here had attempts to duplicate the effect by tweaking curves etc. and comparing to DRO shots. I think the final decision was that indeed DRO was doing rather more than this. Logically, you would think this is probably so, if it was just a tweaking of curves it is hard to imagine that Sony, Pentax, Nikon (and I think there are others) would be paying to use the program under licence.--

I concur, though many may be more likely to use a monopod which does not incur “license” fees as does a tripod in many venues, and is less expensive when beginning photography. In addition, aperture can impact things like image sharpness and depth of field, so it is all about choosing the best aperture for your subject and your shooting environment. If you are taking pictures in low light and you want to avoid introducing camera shake to your images when shooting hand-held, it is best to take pictures with the widest possible aperture your lens can provide, so that your camera can receive as much light as possible. For example, if you shoot with a 35mm f/1.8 lens, you might want to keep that aperture at f/1.8 in such conditions. However, if you are standing at a beautiful overlook and you want to capture a sharp photograph of the whole landscape, stopping down the aperture of your lens to something like f/5.6 will be optimal. It is important to understand the impact of aperture and what it can do to your photographs, so I highly recommend that you read the linked articles above.
