Jupiter (mythology) - Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedi

Jupiter was the son of Ops, the earth mother and Saturn, the prevailing sky god who ruled over the rest of the Roman pantheon. Saturn had usurped his oppressive father Caelus in order to assume the position of supremacy; however he quickly became tyrannical himself, heeding a prophecy claiming that one of his own sons would overthrow him. In order to prevent this from occurring, Saturn devoured all of his children as soon as they were born. Realizing that her next child Jupiter would be susceptible to the same treatment, Ops hid him as soon as he was born and offered Saturn a large stone wrapped in swaddling clothes in his place. Saturn swallowed the stone, and was forced to disgorge Jupiter's siblings in the process of ridding it from his digestive system. Jupiter returned from hiding to overthrow Saturn, assuming leadership over the cosmos and forcing Saturn to flee to Italy. The Roman god Jupiter was father of the gods. His name probably a distortion of earlier names linked to the word for light and day. Borrowed from the Indo-European deities How was Jupiter perceived by the Romans? Jupiter started his life as a stone, interestingly, the Romans worshipped stones and this goes back into history notably the Stone Age. This is because taxes were often made from the stone material. In Roman times Jupiter was worshipped by many as I have already mentioned. The Romans took many of their own gods from the Greek myths. In Rome temples were erected to worship Jupiter, he was a Lord of rain and thunder and would punish the mortals if they have sinned – well, this is what they believed.

It is an irregular noun (derived from Jovis Pater), the genitive form being Jovis (ancient orthography Iouis, pronounced ) hence the adjectives Jovian and jovial. The name (other ancient forms of which include Diovis, Diespiter and Iovis pater) is cognate with Classical Greek Zeus patēr (Template:Polytonic) and Sanskrit Dyaus pitar, all derived from Indo-European *Dyeus Phter "sky/god the father". The elements are also cognate with Latin diēs "day" and deus "god", and with Germanic Tyr fater (from which arises the word Tuesday, although Jupiter was equated in Anglo-Saxon times with a different god, Thor, hence Jovis diēs is represented in English as Thursday). Fires followed again in 69 C.E., when the Capitol was stormed by the supporters of Vitellius. However, the temple's ultimate dilapidation began in the fifth century, when Stilicho carried off the gold–plated doors and Narses removed many of the statues in 571 C.E. The surviving remains of the foundations and of the podium, most of which now lie underneath Palazzo Caffarelli, consisted of enormous parallel sections of walling made in blocks of grey tufa-quadriga stone (cappellaccio) bearing witness to the sheer enormity of the surface area of the temple's base (about 55 by 60 meters).

Superhuman Durability: Zeus has shown to be extremely durable, as he registered no feeling from being repeatedly assailed by Kim Doo-Shik, despite the latter's dominance in strength as a Six member. He is not invulnerable, however, as Seo Han-Ryang's grenade was able to knock out one of his teeth. Zeus managed to endure Seo Han-Ryang's Pumba Zero Stance 'Panhandler' which was the Six member's ultimate technique that tore up the ground between them into a large fissure with only a large bruise on his torso. A new study from an international team of astronomers has dated Jupiter for the first time, and their findings suggest that the Gas Giant is the oldest planet in the solar system As he met his father he gave him a drink which was a potion from a Titan called Metis, which his wife helped to source. Jupiter’s mother organized that Jupiter would give this to his father in order for him to regurgitate his brothers and sisters, which he did. What also happened next was that the stone that Saturn (Cronos in Greek) swallowed previously suddenly came from his mouth and landed at the feet of Jupiter. His brothers and sisters were so grateful to Jupiter for releasing them that they supported him to become the ruler.Jupiter was also worshipped by way of the lapides silices, a collection of pebbles or small stones, which were kept on the Capitoline Hill. These stones were used by Roman priests (called Fetiales) for symbolic ceremonies in which declarations of war and treaties were made official on behalf of the Roman state. In the ceremonies, the fetiales took one of these stones in their hand and then swore by Jupiter, dropping the stone at the last words. This oath made upon Iuppiter Lapis, or the Jupiter Stone, was considered by the Romans to be the most solemn oath possible [1]. Considering Jupiter's function as ajudicator of oaths, it is not surprising that it was only in the presence of Jupiter's priests that the confarreatio, the most ancient and sacred form of marriage in the Roman tradition, took place.

Zeus is, like the other Heavenly Realm gods, heavily prideful. Like Beelzebub, the former Master of the Heavenly Realm, Zeus craves and revels worship as he demanded that Samuel Rosinante and his team worship and praise him while he's destroying South Korea to turn it into a new Olympus. He's shown to hold some distaste towards Odin and his descendant, as he attempted to kill Anna for borrowing the power of Thor, Odin's son, which may be attributed to his position as authority over the Greek god pantheon. Jupiter is the top god of the Roman pantheon. Jupiter was considered the chief deity of Roman state religion during the Republican and Imperial eras until Christianity became the dominant religion Jupiter's many functions varied along with his numerous epithets. As Jupiter Fulgurator ("of the lightning") and Jupiter Tonans ("thunderer"), he was known as the God of the storms. As Jupiter Lucetius ("of the light"), he was esteemed as purveyor of the universe. Furthermore, Jupiter also had immense political significance. He was referred to as Juppiter Optimus Maximus Soter (the "best, greatest, saviour Jupiter"), which not only described his supremacy over the rest of the divine pantheon, but also marked his status as the patron deity of the Roman state, in charge of laws and social order. In his connection to justice, Jupiter was especially concerned with oaths, treaties, and leagues. For instance, Roman citizens swore an oath to Jupiter in their courts of law, uttering the phrase "By Jove!" to indicate that words were truthful in the name of God. Jupiter's connection with the conscience, obligation and trustworthiness was never quite lost throughout Roman history. Additionally, Jupiter defended Rome against foreign interests. As Jupiter Terminus or Jupiter Terminalus, the god was thought to defend the boundaries of Rome. As Jupiter Victor, he led Roman armies to victory, and as Jupiter Feretrius he helped carry away the subsequent spoils of war. As such, armies returning home victorious from the battlefield made sure to pass the Capitoline temple to Jupiter as a sign of gratefulness to their chief god.

Among the many gods of the Romans, Jupiter, the son of Saturn, was the supreme god, associated with thunder, lightning, and storms. The first citizens of what would become Rome believed they were watched over by the spirits of their ancestors, and they added a triad of gods to these spirits. These new gods included Mars, the god of war; Quirinus, the deified Romulus who watched over the people of Rome; and lastly, Jupiter, the supreme god. He was Jupiter Elicius - one who brings forth. By the rise of the Republic, Jupiter’s identity as the greatest of all the gods was firmly established, but two members of the old triad were replaced with Juno (his sister and wife) and Minerva (his daughter). Jupiter God of Kings. Jupiter is considered the most gracious of the Players. He is the giver of gifts, the goodwill ambassador of the games Jupiter or Iuppiter is a vocative compound derived from the archaic Latin Iovis and pater (Latin for father). Linguistic studies identify the Latin theonym Jupiter as having derived from the phonologically similar proto-Indo-European compound *dyēus- pəter-, which refers to the "Father God," ruler of the daytime sky. This is the very same deity from whom also derives the Sanskrit Dyaus or Dyaus Pita ("Sky Father") of the Vedas, the Germanic *Tiwaz, and of course the Greek Zeus. This word *dyēus- pəter- itself derives from the proto-Indo-European root diu, meaning “bright” or "to shine," referring to the light of the sun and sky in daytime. For the Romans, as well as other mythological systems derived from proto-Indo-European roots such as that of the Vedas and the Norse, the god of the sky was also the supreme god. Thus, the similarity between Jupiter's Latin title and those given to the celestial gods in the Sanskrit, Germanic and Greek languages provides strong linguistic evidence that the god had a connection to the Proto-Indo-European sky god.

Jupiter, the old, personalized deity of the Etruscan kings, found a new home in the Republic. He was a god of light, a protector during defeat, and the giver of victory. He was Jupiter Imperator, the supreme general; Jupiter Invictus, the unconquered; and lastly, Jupiter Triumphator. He protected Rome in time of war and maintained the welfare of the people during peace. He was most often portrayed with a long, white beard, and his symbol was the eagle atop a scepter which he carried as he sat upon his majestic throne. As with Zeus, his reputation for violence often caused men to tremble in fear for he could easily punish them with one of his thunderbolts. Of course, he would give them a fair warning before the final, destructive bolt, and punishment was usually carried out only with the consent of the other gods. He's also shown to be lustful, easily distracted by women, even with the presence of wife. Roman worship of Jupiter has had a lasting impact upon the Western world. In English, the adjective "jovial," which comes from Jupiter's alternative name "Jove," is still used today to describe people who are jolly, optimistic, and buoyant in temperament. The god's name was also adopted as the title of the planet Jupiter, the fifth planet from the sun and the largest planet in our solar system. Additionally, Jupiter remains the origin of the weekday called "Thursday" in English. In Latin, Thursday is known as Iovis Dies or "Jupiter's Day" and many European langauges still refer to this day of the week in the connection to Jupiter, such as the French jeudi and the Italian giovedì. Much like his Greek counterpart Zeus, Jupiter has had a lasting impact upon the Western world, despite his decline in his worship. For instance, the expression "by Jove!," once sworn in Roman courts, became a common colloquialism and is still used as an archaism today. In addition, the English adjective "jovial," which also takes its root from Jupiter's alternative moniker, is still used today to describe people who are jolly, optimistic, and buoyant in temperament. As well, the name of the god was adopted as the name of the planet Jupiter, fifth planet from the sun and fittingly the largest celestial body in our solar system. Jupiter was the original namesake of the weekday that would come to be known in English as Thursday. The contemporary name comes from the Old English Þunresdæg meaning "Day of Thor" (the comparable sky god of the Norse pantheon), this being a rough Germanic equivalent to the Latin Iovis Dies or "Jupiter's Day." Other Romantic languages use equivalent terms to refer to this day of the week, notable for their phonological resemblance the name of Jupiter, such as the French jeudi and the Italian giovedì.

Throughout Italy he was worshiped on the summits of hills; thus, on the Alban Hill south of Rome was an ancient seat of his worship as Jupiter Latiaris, which was the centre of the league of 30 Latin cities of which Rome was originally an ordinary member. At Rome itself on the Capitoline Hill was his oldest temple; here there was a tradition of his sacred tree, the oak, common to the worship both of Zeus and of Jupiter, and here, too, were kept the lapides silices, pebbles or flint stones, which were used in symbolic ceremonies by the fetiales, the Roman priests who officially declared war or made treaties on behalf of the Roman state. Aside from a large sculpture of Jupiter, the temple, the grandest of all in Rome, housed the Sibylline books which were the oracles of Rome and were only consulted during moments of crisis. Jupiter was worshipped by many titles: Invictus, Imperator, and Triumphator - titles that represented his supreme importance to Rome in all matters of state life, both in peace and war. After returning from battle, victorious generals would lead a procession called a triumph through the streets of Rome to Jupiter’s temple. The general would be dressed in a long, purple robe, carrying a scepter in his right hand, riding in a chariot drawn by four white horses; he was followed by a large mass of citizens, his army, and prisoners of war, the latter of course, in chains. After arriving at the temple, he would make a sacrifice, being sure to donate a portion of his booty to Jupiter, thanking Jupiter for his victory in battle.             Facts about Jupiter. Jupiter is the fourth brightest object in the solar system. Jupiter is named after the king of the Roman gods. To the Greeks, it represented Zeus, the god of thunder To the early Romans religion and faith, especially during the early years of the Republic, offered reassurance and protection to the people. It was a major component in every aspect of life; few decisions were made without appealing to the gods. Roman religion, however, was not individualistic as Christianity, for example; it was communal. There was no holy text or creed; there was only the pax decorum or peace of the gods. Through rituals and prayer, the Romans curried favor with the gods and thereby evaded his or her wrath. And, while the Romans were often tolerant of the religion of those they conquered (often absorbing an occasional new god or two), they remained protective of the official state religion and were suspicious of anything that might undermine their power structure. This suspicion was the underlying cause of the persecution of both the Jews and Christians during the reigns of Nero and subsequent emperors. This protection would enable Jupiter and his fellow Olympians to survive from the Etruscans, through both the Republican and Imperial Eras, and up to the rise of Christianity.

Apparently, the legend is that Jupiter’s Mother fooled Cronus by making him swallow a stone instead of Jupiter in the beginning. Now was the time for Jupiter to take power. This small boy had grown to feel some he was quite strong and rather clever. He knew that as he had grown old enough this was the time he had to face his father. He met his father Saturn (Cronos in Greek) for the first time and as you can imagine was feeling somewhat nervous. However, Zeus also respects those who he are strong.
